We foster global and city-specific cross-disciplinary problem-solving, co-creation and collaboration.

What is Conscious Design?

Conscious Design is an enactive, equitable, empathic process of creating environments that are aware of and responsive to the needs and aspirations of its participants. It entails places, spaces and objects that have an awareness of, and responsibility towards people. Conscious Design augments the accountability and transparency of traditional Design Thinking by focusing on an equitable articulation of collective intent as a carefully calibrated person-space dialogue. A network of such a dialogue between people, communities, and their experience in spaces then acts as a framework as well as the feedback system in space-making.

Our Vision

Our vision is to connect people, phenomena, and place by reconceptualizing design thinking and revitalising citymaking and push for a conscious model. Conscious design leads this foresight by shaping enactive awareness, equitable intent, and empathic response in the built environment. Our innovation in Conscious Design is geared to implement a practical decentralisation in urban and spatial decision making by focusing on connecting people to co-create and collaborate guided by conscious design principles of enactivism, equity, and empathy. We strive to create environments which maximize individual and community potential to promote wellbeing, as well as socio-ecological resilience while enriching experience in everyday life. We believe in disseminating principles as solution frameworks rather than in giving one-size-fits-all solutions. Since Conscious Design is a continually metamorphosing process, the principles approach better facilitates and encourages cross-chapter problem-solving, co-creation, collaboration, and communication.

The CCD & the Conscious Cities movement

The centre emerged out of the Conscious Cities movement that advocates for a science-informed and community driven approach to connecting people and place through mindfully crafted technology and interfaces. Our mission is to develop Conscious Design as a framework for spatial theory and practice to spur intersectional dialogues, create tools, and catalyse the industry to evolve Conscious Cities. The CCD strives to promote the mission of the movement. The CCD consists of an international network of interdisciplinary passionaries who study, investigate, and practice socially conscious design. We believe that as an equity-driven and grassroots movement, Conscious Cities should stay open to anyone wishing to engage with and advance the related research and practice. Anyone can organize Conscious Cities events or publications and we will do our best to support that work if invited to do so.

The Center's Goals

explorethe person-Spacerelationship in orderto create create ahealthier dialogueand modes ofproduction for thebuilt environment

advocatefor changes in designpractice and decisionmaking that affectthe quality of of thebuilt environment

We believe in disseminating principles as solution frameworks rather than in giving one-size-fits-all solutions.

Since Conscious Design is a continually metamorphosing process, the principles approach better shapes the intended systems change. In this way, we intend to empower and activate broad ecosystems of communities, decision makers, designers, researchers, technologists, funders, and artists to collectively, actively, and effectively address the future needs and aspirations of space participants.
