Heroes Will Rise

Cas Holman is a Providence-based designer and educator. Her designs explore the intersection of play, learning and creativity and are used in K-12 classrooms, playgrounds, children’s museums and public parks around the world. Through her company Heroes Will Rise, Cas designs and manufactures tools for imagination that use manipulatable parts and pieces inspiring constructive play, imaginative forms, and cooperative interactions between people. She prototypes her playthings on five acres known as Camp Fun in Hope, RI.

Cas’ first toy Geemo was designed while pursuing her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Arts and launched at the NY MoMA Design Store in 2007. It has since won numerous awards and was shown in design and toy fairs in Moscow, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, Hamburg and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2005 she joined Rockwell Group, a New York City architecture firm, to develop the Imagination Playground for Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. The oversized building blocks she designed for that park are currently found in playgrounds and schools worldwide. In 2011, she worked alongside early childhood educators to imagine play opportunities in the High Line’s elevated park in Manhattan, with her pop-up playground, the High Line Children’s Workyard Kit, debuting in June 2011. The Workyard Kit, since re-engineered for mass production as Rigamajig, has found its way into hundreds of schools, children’s museums, playgrounds, and backyards around the world.
