Jana Urban Space Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Bengaluru, is part of a larger group of social change institutions called Jana Group, cofounded by Swati and Ramesh Ramanathan, comprising Janaagraha, Jana Small Finance Bank, and Janaadhar.

Jana Urban Space works towards transforming the quality of life in urban India through the streams of urban planning and design, across both policy and practice. Placing community, and environmental sustainability at the heart of design, Jana Urban Space works on policies on land titling, spatial reforms, and street design guidelines, as well as regional plans, masterplans, and neighbourhood-level plans, the improvement of road infrastructure through Tender S.U.R.E. (Specifications for Urban Road Execution), rejuvenation of public spaces (markets, bus stands, lakes, parks, heritage, and community centres), and the architecture of affordable housing.

Jana USP is unique in many ways – multiple Studios provide a perspective city as an organic system with many interconnected parts; insight into the Group organisations and their work – city governance, civic participation, financial inclusion, affordable housing; 360º theory of change enables real work on the ground; organisational DNA of multi-stakeholder engagement with political representatives, community, government, business; cutting- edge innovation and implementation in each of our Studios.

At Jana USP, we are ambitious for change in our cities. While we have a long road ahead, our work over the last ten years has resulted in bringing the importance of urban planning and design, squarely into the spotlight of relevant dialogue on improving the state of our cities.
