This Bridge Event explores how neuroscience can inform the assessment and design of outdoor learning environments within educational campuses.

While much attention has been given to indoor learning spaces, outdoor environments remain underexplored despite their significant impact on cognition, behavior, and wellbeing. This session brings together perspectives from cognitive neuroscience and architectural practice to address this gap.

The discussion is anchored in a research-based framework developed to evaluate outdoor campus spaces through a neuroscientific lens, examining factors such as perception, attention, stress, and social interaction. Building on this, the event connects theoretical insights on brain–environment interaction with practical approaches to human-centered design.

By bridging scientific understanding, evaluative tools, and real-world design application, the session aims to advance new ways of thinking about campuses—not only as physical settings, but as cognitive and experiential ecosystems that shape learning and everyday life.

Dr. Maria A. El Helou is an architect, researcher, educator, and founder of ANCED (Academy of Neuroscience for Cities, Environments & Design). She is widely recognized as one of the pioneers advancing neuroarchitecture in the MENA region since 2011. Her interdisciplinary work integrates architecture, neuroscience, psychology, environmental psychology, and urban design to investigate how built environments influence human wellbeing, behaviour, emotional regulation, identity, and belonging.

Her research spans evidence-based design, sensory architecture, trauma-informed and post-disaster urban planning, emotional experience, and neurodiversity. Through The Neuroarchitect platform and podcast, she brings together leading international researchers to explore how neuroscience can inform healthier, more human-centred environments. Her work emphasizes translating scientific knowledge into practical design strategies that support emotional safety, cognitive functioning, wellbeing, and resilient communities.

Dr. Alexandros A. Lavdas is a neuroscientist and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Biomedicine, Eurac Research. Originally trained in developmental neuroscience, neurobiology, and biomedical imaging, he has increasingly worked at the intersection of neuroscience, architecture, environmental psychology, and neuroaesthetics. His research investigates how the human brain unconsciously perceives and evaluates built environments using methods such as eye tracking, visual attention analysis, biometric measurements, and affective neuroscience. He is particularly interested in how architectural geometry, visual complexity, and spatial organization influence attention, emotional responses, wellbeing, and aesthetic experience. His work aims to provide evidence-based foundations for human-centered architectural and urban design.
