Event Recap + What’s Ahead

Last Wednesday, Conscious Philadelphia hosted its inaugural event, Designing for Democracy. The theme stemmed from a thought-provoking question: How does the built environment shape our ability to participate in democracy? (And yes, I may have a conspiracy theory about the suburbs dismantling democracy—but more on that later.)

We gathered an incredible lineup of practitioners to explore what designing for democracy means in their work:

  • Brian Phillips – ISA Architects
  • Danita Reese – City of Philadelphia’s Service Design Studio
  • Heidi Segall-Levy – Watchdog Real Estate Project Management
  • Julia Miller – Playful Learning Landscapes
  • Vivian Chang – Asian Americans United

While each speaker brought a unique perspective, one common thread emerged: democracy is rooted in our ability to congregate. From physical spaces that foster civic engagement to service design that ensures equitable access to public resources, the conversation underscored how the design directly impacts participation in public processes and public life.

We’ll be sharing recordings of the presentations soon, along with deeper dives into key ideas. Stay tuned—this is just the beginning of the conversation. And if you’re curious about how suburban design fits into all of this, join us during Conscious Cities Festival Week, where we’ll continue exploring democracy by design, both in theory and practice.
