Welcome to the Conscious Cities Festival, where designers, researchers, technologists, decision makers and local communities converge to explore the intricate relationship between the built environment and human flourishing.
The 2025 festival will unveil and explore the concept of “Regrounding” – the deliberate practice of reconnecting with time and place. How can we consciously design places that counter society’s rush into the digital and abstract? How can science inform the emergence of healthy environments for people, communities, and ecologies?
Events focusing on three related themes will drive collective imagination, strengthen connections, and inspire collaborations. Read more about the themes:
Reconnecting with Place
In many urban areas the lack of healthy connections to place is becoming increasingly evident. Disconnected, poorly designed environments can lead to a sense of isolation, diminished community spirit, and a decline in overall quality of life.
Place attachment goes beyond mere physical spaces—it encompasses the emotional and psychological bonds that people form with their environments. These connections shape our identities, influence our well-being, and enhance our sense of belonging.
How do we create meaningful spaces that promote social cohesion and inspire civic pride? How can the science of place attachment inform successful place-making strategies that inspire pro-environmental and pro-social behaviour?
The Human-Tech Convergence
As technology and A.I. continue to embed themselves into our lives and our surroundings, how do we negotiate and safeguard ways of being that support human flourishing?
From sensing technologies, smart cities and intelligent buildings, to the digitalization of public spaces; how can these innovations enhance sustainability and connectivity while also addressing concerns such as privacy, equity, and well-being?
How do we leverage innovation for positive impact?
The Design of Time
To many, the scarcity of time in daily life is a source of stress, and in some cases creates a cycle of time poverty. Over-burdened routines exasperated by a culture of transit, poorly designed urban environments, and economic stressors are negatively impacting our wellbeing. How much of this experience can be mitigated or reversed by rethinking how we arrange and design our homes, neighbourhoods, and cities?
Can the conscious design of our surroundings and daily rituals empower us to shape experiences that foster health, belonging and purpose?
How do we forge a new, healthier relationship with time?
The festival’s opening event will be held in Milan, Italy – organised by Conscious Milan. More information to be announced soon.
